Just in time for Swim Suit Season: MessyWorks Celebrates All Body Types

Comedienne Sarah Silverman is not known for sensitivity in her jokes, a recent TED performance about “adopting a retarded baby” is enough proof. But there is one thing the shock-joker apparently won't touch-- fat-lady jokes. She told Larry King:"I guess if there is anything I wouldn't talk about... fat jokes about women. That always bums me out because I feel like we live in a country where fat women - at least in white America - don't deserve love. And I don't think that's true for men. You see every sitcom star is like a fat guy with some gorgeous wife."

"But we live in a country that really feels that way. And that just makes me sad to make a joke of it or to make light of it. It tends to be more mean-spirited."

MessyWorks loves all funny ladies and their veritable rainbow of body types. Our thing is that you don't have to be a model to be a MessyWorks girl-- you just gotta be brave and fun. It is great that Sarah is speaking out but we also aren't opposed to a little body humor either!

Here are some choice quotes about bodies, weight and dieting from star-comediennes:

  • Kathy Griffin is always thinking of the needy. After her liposuction procedure she announced to fans that the fat "was donated to a soup kitchen."

  • Riffing on the typical “my new bikini bod” features in gossip mags, Griffin also quipped “I am very proud of my two weeks on speed. It was full-on illegal speed.”

  • Roseanne Barr, whose weight prompted a lot of jokes from others said: “It's okay to be fat. So you're fat. Just be fat and shut up about it.”

  • Roseanne also philosophized: “Women should try to increase their size rather than decrease it, because I believe the bigger we are, the more space we'll take up, and the more we'll have to be reckoned with.”

  • Maragret Cho is no stranger to media-body-scrutiny. And she comes across as pretty body-positive: "I am so beautiful, sometimes people weep when they see me. And it has nothing to do with what I look like really, it is just that I gave myself the power to say that I am beautiful, and if I could do that, maybe there is hope for them too. And the great divide between the beautiful and the ugly will cease to be. Because we are all what we choose."

  • Cho also so eloquently said: “The first thing that you lose on a diet is brain mass.”

MessyWorks agrees. And to further celebrate our love for all body types, MessyWorks would like to profile one of our all-time favorite comediennes, a fat-positive, body-positive superstar:

Miss Piggy

When asked what sign she was born under, Miss Piggy said: “"I wasn't born under a sign, I was born over a sign. Becker's butcher shop. I moved as soon as I could."According to Frank Oz, the creator of the Muppets, Miss Piggy's father was a sow-chaser and her mother pumped out piglet after piglet, never taking the time to “find herself.” Miss Piggy vowed: “I'll die before I live like that!” and ran away to the city. According to Oz, “Life was hard at first. People got all the jobs; pigs had to take what was left. Desperate, she took a stage name, Laverne, and entered a beauty contest. She won and got her big break: a bacon commercial.” Miss Piggy never let her size (or species) pigeon-hole her. Nevertheless, she's been quite opinionated on questions of looks and weight. Some words of advice from the celeb-u-pig herself:

“Never eat more than you can lift.”

“Moi does not recommend dieting. The only way you can lose weight is the same way you lose anything - by forgetting where you put it. “

“The object of exercise is to achieve your beauty aspirations without perspiration.”

And her best kept beauty secret: “We exercise all the time. We run when we are late for lunch date. We stretch when we hail a taxi. We twist when we wave our hand to a friend. We bend if we must examine someone's diamond ring. All other exercise methods require you to perform difficult movements which are unnatural and which you will never use in daily life. Is your mail opened behind your back? Do you lift your leg or twiddle all your toes to call a waiter? Do you use your knees to turn on a light?”

Duly noted Miss Piggy, The MessyWorks girls take your diet and exercise advice to heart. Around here we like to get our exercise from a swift wind-back of the hand...you guessed it:

Celebrate your body as is it is today. MessyWorks thinks you look great. But you just might look a little better with some pie dripping off.
